Unlike most actresses of her time, KANAN did not have a stage background,
and her screen performances were never theatrical. When the Mahila Shilpi
Mahal was formed, she took part in the plays, mostly in symbolic appearances
like the zamindar’s role in Kabi. In Manmoyee Girls School, she played
Manmoyee, her only major stage role.
KANAN was an accomplished public speaker, capable of keeping her
audience spellbound. Her first platform speaking was at a prize giving
function in a school. She had agreed to be present on condition that
she would be visible only and not audible. The organizers however
announced her name as one of the speakers and she had to go to the
microphone and managed to mumble a few words. That was the
beginning and from then on she perfected the art and excelled in it.
