(Both duets with Ashok Kumar).

The film was a major hit in both the versions and rehabilitated KANAN,
whose then fluctuating film fortunes took a turn for better days. The film
ran to packed houses for several months.

It was described as a glamorous movie with Ashok Kumar from Bombay
coming to Calcutta for the first time for his first Bengali film.

KANAN’s fee for this film was Rupees one more than that of hero Ashok Kumar.

However, the film faced severe criticism for changing the basics in the story
line. In fact the then censor board ruled that for classic literature arbitary
changes would not be allowed and ultimately director Debaki Kumar Bose
had to apologize publicly for having offended the feelings of the public in
general and Bankim Chandra’s descendants in particular.
